White River High School student serves in House Page Program
Hazel Kato, a 15-year-old ninth grader from White River High School in Buckley, recently completed an exciting week of service in the Washington State House of Representatives Page Program. Sponsored by Rep. Joshua Penner, Hazel had the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the legislative process.
“Hazel brought enthusiasm, dedication, and a strong work ethic to the page program,” said Penner, R-Orting. “Her creativity, reflected in her passion for drawing, and her teamwork skills, developed through her love for soccer, made her a great addition to the team at the Capitol.”
Throughout the week, Hazel took on various responsibilities, including delivering messages between legislative offices, assisting with House floor operations, and participating in educational activities designed to deepen her understanding of state government.
“The page program is an incredible way for students to engage with the legislative process,” Penner added. “Hazel’s participation gave her firsthand insight into how laws are made and how government functions, knowledge that will serve her well in the future.”
The legislative session runs from Jan. 13 to April 17, with weekly opportunities for students aged 14 to 16 to serve as pages. Participants receive a daily stipend of $65 and can earn up to 20 hours of community service.
