Puyallup student serves as page in the Washington State House of Representatives
Audrey Kooser, a student from Puyallup High School, recently had the opportunity to spend a week at the Capitol serving as a page in the Washington State House of Representatives. She was sponsored by 31st District Rep. Joshua Penner.
“It was an honor to sponsor Audrey as a page,” said Penner, R-Orting. “She did a fantastic job, and I hope she enjoyed her time at the Capitol making new friends, gaining hands-on experience, and learning more about how our state government operates.”
Audrey’s interests and hobbies include baking, sewing, and swimming.
As a page, Audrey navigated the many buildings around the Capitol, delivered messages and documents to legislators and staff, and assisted on the House floor. Each day, she attended page school to learn more about the legislative process, gaining a deeper understanding of how state laws are made. By the end of the week, she had the opportunity to co-write a bill and present it in a mock committee hearing with her fellow pages.
Each year, students from across Washington apply to participate in the legislative page program. Pages spend a week at the Capitol attending page school, assisting legislators, and learning firsthand about state government. They earn $65 per day and can earn up to 20 hours of community service for their time in the program.
To become a page, students must have a legislative sponsor, be between the ages of 14 and 16, and obtain permission from their parents and school. More information about the House Page Program can be found here.
