Edgewood student serves as page in State House of Representatives
Aquila Joshua, a student from Edgemont Junior High School, recently had the opportunity to spend time on the Capitol campus, serving as a page in the Washington State House of Representatives. 31st District Rep. Joshua Penner sponsored her.
“It was an honor to sponsor Aquila as a page,” said Penner, R-Orting. “She brought great energy and enthusiasm to the House, and I hope this experience inspired her to stay involved in civic life. The page program is a fantastic way for young people to see firsthand how their state government works.”
Aquila is 14 years old and lives in Edgewood. She is in the 9th grade and enjoys performance arts and fashion.
As a page, Aquila navigated the many buildings around the Capitol campus, delivered messages and documents to legislators and staff, and assisted on the House floor. She also attended page school for a few hours each day to learn about the legislative process. By the end of the week, she had co-written a bill and participated in a mock committee hearing alongside her fellow pages.
Each year, students from across the state apply to participate in the legislative page program. Students spend a week attending page school, learning the inner workings of state government, and assisting legislators in their day-to-day work. Pages earn $65 a day and can earn up to 20 hours of community service during their time in the program.
To become a page, students must have a legislative sponsor, be between the ages of 14 and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. For more information about the House page program, click here.
