VIDEO | The American Mirror: Rep. Joshua Penner honors MLK Day
In this floor speech observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day and House Resolution 4672, Rep. Joshua Penner, R-Orting, reflects on the passage of time and the true weight of the Civil Rights movement.
Moving beyond the polished excerpts often remembered, Penner challenges us to remember the “nightmare” that necessitated the “dream.”
He discusses the courage it took for Dr. King to hold a mirror up to America—forcing the nation to confront its flaws to achieve its promise.
Penner argues that the work of democracy is messy and painful, but essential to safeguarding the American idea.
