Puyallup student serves as page in the Washington State House of Representatives
Kylee Kooser, a ninth-grade student from the Puyallup School District, recently had the opportunity to spend a week at the Capitol serving as a page in the Washington State House of Representatives. 31st District Rep. Joshua Penner sponsored her.
“It was an honor to sponsor Kylee as a page,” said Penner, R-Orting. “She brought great energy to the Capitol, and I hope this experience inspired her to stay engaged in civic life. The page program gives students a firsthand look at how state government works, and Kylee did a wonderful job representing her community.”
As a page, Kylee helped keep the House running smoothly by delivering messages and documents to legislators and staff, assisting on the House floor, and navigating the Capitol campus in Olympia. Each day, she also attended page school, where she learned about the legislative process and how state laws are made. By the end of the week, Kylee worked with fellow pages to co-write a bill and participate in a mock committee hearing.
Outside of school, Kylee enjoys reading, running, and creating art, interests that reflect the curiosity, creativity, and dedication she brought with her to the Capitol during her week as a page.
Each year, students from across Washington apply to take part in the House Page Program. Participants spend a week at the Capitol attending page school, assisting legislators, and gaining hands-on experience in state government. Pages receive a daily stipend of $65 and can earn up to 20 hours of community service.
To become a page, students must be ages 14 to 16, have a legislative sponsor, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. More information about the House Page Program is available on the Legislature’s website: leg.wa.gov.
